MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
Myofascial Release is a whole body technique suitable for all ages, which releases the fascial system. Fascia is a 3D continuous web that extends the entire length of the body from the top of the head to the tips of the toes, rather like a body stocking. Fascia surrounds, supports and protects every tissue, tendon, muscle, ligament, bone and organ in the body and gives the body its shape. Under normal healthy conditions the fascia is relaxed but, when the body is traumatised through one or more of the following:- repetitive motion, poor posture, injury, operations or accident etc., it becomes pulled (much like a pull in a stocking). This causes restrictions and, in turn, pulls and twists our bodies out of alignment. This then compresses muscles, nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels and causes pain. Restrictions in the fascia can cause pain anywhere in the body, the muscles can be restricted, tight and painful and could cause any system in the body, such as circulatory system, digestive system etc. not to work as well as they should.
Firstly, a postural assessment of the client's body, looking at the whole body (for example we are looking at how the person stands etc.). The treatment is then carried out by the therapist placing their hands on the area causing the problem (for example, if the patient complains of a problem with their leg, then the therapist would begin work in this area). With the hands placed on the skin the therapist begins to feel the restrictions in the fascia. This shows the therapist how to release the fascia using either gentle compression or gentle stretching, this in turn will decrease pain, improve function and increase the blood flow to every part of the body. The therapist may, as a result of what they feel is happening to the fascia, treat other areas of the body which the restriction is affecting.
This treatment is proving to be very beneficial for people with long established problems, such as neck, shoulders, back and sciatica to name but a few.
